The Ancestral Visa

If you have a British Born Grandparent – you are entitled to an Ancestral Visa.

An Ancestral visa will allow you to live and work in the UK.

An ancestral visa is issued in the form of a ‘Permanent Resident Card’ and this will allow you 5 years in the UK. Before this 5 year period ends, you will need to apply for ‘Indefinite Leave to Remain’ and after that, Citizenship. The whole process can take 6-8 years in total. Indefinite leave to Remain and Citizenship is applied for in the UK, you do not have to return home to do this.

An Ancestral visa can also be issued to dependents. So if you have a British born Grandparent and yourself and your spouse and your children (under 18) wish to move to the UK, you can all go.

The Ancestral visa is not an easy visa to obtain and many requirements must be met.

As of a few years ago, an additional fee has been added to the process – The Health Surcharge.

When making an ancestral visa application, ALL applicants have to pay the immigration healthcare surcharge (IHS). The IHS is intended to fund healthcare from the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) which you will be able to access when living in the UK. The surcharge is GBP620 per person per year.

As the ‘Ancestral visa / permanent residency’ is issued for a period of 5 years, this means the health surcharge is charged at GBP620 x 5 per person. IE: GBP 3120 per person.

Children under 18 pay slightly less than adults do.

The Ancestral visa consular fee goes up and down with the exchange rate. As does the Health Surcharge fee.

The Visa Agent will advise of all documents needed, check all said documents very carefully to ensure all in correct order, help to gather some documents where possible, complete all the relevant online, secure and pay for application, set up appointments, track the application.
